Cold weather is the key to good wild hog hunting in the winter. It's really that simple. If the hogs aren't suffering in freezing temperatures and having to work for food to survive, they will generally not move much and just lay around deep in the thick cover enjoying the nice days and only moving occasionally and erratically late at night. And after our warm Fall with lots of acorns to feast on, the hogs are fat and in great shape to easily skip a few meals while they wait out the summer-like days. This makes them so much tougher to kill, so we love to see a cold front headed our way any weekend we are hunting!

And that's what happened this past weekend. We had a few warm days slowing the movement. But then it cooled back off with a low of 25 Friday night, and this nice weather helped our old friend Justin to kill a huge 282 lb sow and his his friend Jenny to kill a fantastic 141 lb sow. Congratulations!

Justin also hit the record button on our ATN scope and captured the shot, so make sure and check it out below as well as some of the wild hog activity our trailcams caught this week.

Welcome to our new blog to showcase our hunters' successes. Since we can no longer count on any of the Social Media platforms to allow us to show our pictures, videos and stories, we will be updating this weekly with our kills and hunting reports as well as what else we are up to on the properties and around the lodge! So check in frequently! I am also working on creating a newsletter that you can sign up for; I can then send our blog posts right to you as well as let everyone know of any last-minute openings or changes to our hunt schedule.

As for the hunting here in the lowcountry, we had a very warm fall with a huge acorn crop giving the deer and hogs alternative food sources which made for a good but tougher than normal season. However, once the acorns ran out, and we got some sustained cold weather in January, our wild hogs finally got up and moving. We even had over 5 inches of snow in January to ensure they

have been suffering in the swamps and hungry, and these good conditions allowed us to have some great hunts, eat tons of fantastic food like the venison baked ziti pictured and kill some nice wild pigs along with a few predators. Hunters also missed quite a few as well as wounded a couple; but that's real wild hog hunting!

We are now in the middle of February, and after a warmer last two weeks, the temperatures are supposed to return to below freezing by this weekend. This should create some more good wild pig hunting in the coming days, so stay tuned!
