Well it finally happened… One of our boys hurt himself bad enough to warrant a trip to the emergency room on Saturday afternoon.
Amy had the boys outside playing in the yard, and Will was walking on the one foot high brick wall the surrounds my mom’s carport next door when he fell off and put his bottom teeth through his bottom lip and knocked in his top two teeth. I wasn’t here, but my wife says that it looked like a scene out of Saving Private Ryan.
Of course the nearest emergency room is about 30 minutes away, so Amy had to race his bundled, bloody face over to the Hampton Medical Center along with my mom and Bo. There they sewed some of his wounds shut while gluing others, and referred us on to a dentist about his two knocked in top teeth.
I knew as crazy as our two monkeys are that we just couldn’t go forever without a trip to the ER. I mean Will has already missed a couple of good opportunities, so we were do. Heck he took one big tumble about six months ago when he pushed too hard agains the screen on my mom’s porch, and he fell two feet down to the concrete. He just happened to kind of roll as he fell, so it really didn’t hurt him thankfully.
But maybe now that he looks like one of the Africans that wears the big lip plate, he will learn to behave himself – but I wouldn’t count on it.

PS. Bo and I didn’t kill any turkeys yesterday, but we sure had fun. He enjoyed listening to me try and coax a big gobbler into our setup while he shot the decoys with his gun, ate snacks and asked “why no turkeys coming out?”. I tell you I still haven’t figured out why we didn’t see anything

Sorry folks for my disappearance over the last week. The family and I did go down to Florida for a couple of days, and we had a great time. We basically just relaxed and visited friends and family as well as took some family outings to cool local places with the boys. We then came home, and I had to get right to work for turkey season, so that has kept me off of the computer.
And I know that I promised to blog while down there, but it just didn’t happen… First I spilled coffee on/in the keyboard on my friend’s computer, and that killed it. Then even after buying him a new one, I was just having too nice of a time taking a break from the computer to get back to it. Don’t get me wrong, I love to write and blog, but sometimes a man just needs a break. So again, I apologize for not posting, and I will get right back to the grind here at lowcountryhunting covering our turkey season which started Sunday morning.
And since I am guiding every morning, I should have lots of hunts to write about. A ton of time in the turkey woods should also give me plenty of ideas and tips to share here on how to bag one of our lowcountry birds.
As for our trip, like I said we took several small trips while we were there including an airboat ride on the St. Johns River last Monday morning as well as a trip down to Sebastian Inlet to play in the surf on Wednesday. The boys really loved getting to see some beautiful Florida country, playing in the water and getting really close to lots and lots of big gators… So much so that they really didn’t want to leave. However I have promised them some turkey hunting of their own, so they did come back with us. And since I am off this morning, Bo and I are headed out to a blind that I have set up to see if we can’t call in a big bird!
I will report back to tomorrow! Thanks for your patience.

Just a quick note this morning… The LowcountryHunting team is in Florida for a few days for some much deserved rest and relaxation before the “War With The Turkeys” starts Sunday.
We are heading out this morning for an airboat ride with the boys and then on for some hiking on the beach. We will also be hitting Sebastian Inlet and several other parks for some picture taking, hiking and hopefully some fishing while we are here.
I have high-speed internet access while I am here (whoo-hoo!), and I plan on putting up some posts on how to bag a big bird opening week as well as what all we are up to down here. So just because we are out of town, don’t think that we have forgotten about our readers or that there isn’t any reason to stop by this week!

I just wanted to bring everyone up to speed on what is going on in the lowcountry right now.
Turkey season is right around the corner, and the birds are getting ready for hunters to hit the woods. The big flocks of hens have broken up in to smaller groups, and the big gobblers are now joining them in the fields. The recent warm weather has also finally got them gobbling good too, so now is a great time to get out and roost some birds in preparation for opening day.
As for the hogs, they are definitely still moving although the weather lately has not been cooperating too well. It has gone from extremely warm to pouring down rain, then back to freezing again. But since there is so little food in the woods, they have no choice but to keep hitting the corn until things start to green up in a few weeks, so keep at them.
I am also still seeing some bucks roaming around with one antler on their heads, so don’t stop looking for sheds yet. Just keep keying in on any food plots, and you should still keep finding new ones even in the areas that you have already checked. And don’t forget about the bedding areas. That is always a great place to look for them, and unfortunately, once things green up again, it will be very hard to locate them in the thick brush. So keep looking while the getting is good.
As for me, I haven’t been doing too much on the actual hunting end of things, and this week I am redoing my mom’s kitchen so my posting has been off. I have also fortunately been busy with both photography work and at the lodge, but that has kept us from any great hiking adventures to report back on. However in our current economy, I will not complain at all and will just happily keep working. But don’t write me off, I promise to break out some great turkey hunting articles before the season startsĀ next Sunday.
Thanks for reading.
